Do my brick joints need pointing, or is the wall fine?

Brick pointing in Merced is the repair of worn mortar joints in a brick wall, where we cut out the failing mortar and pack in new mortar so the joints are solid and tight again. You'll also hear it called repointing or tuckpointing.

Most people call after they notice grit at the foot of a wall or a joint they can scratch out with a key, and they worry the whole house needs redoing. At Optimum Merced Concrete and Masonry we're based in Merced and work in the cities around it, including Atwater, Turlock, Modesto and Madera, and that worry usually turns out bigger than the job. The price and the schedule come down to how many joints are failing, how high they sit and how closely the new mortar has to match, and the estimate puts in writing which joints we'll fix and how. If some of the bricks themselves are cracked or flaking, that's brick repair, and we can take care of both on the same job.

Why Merced homeowners call us for brick pointing

  • The owner looks at every joint

I come out to look at the wall and write the estimate myself, then work on site with our crew. The person who judged your joints is the one making sure they're done right.

  • Licensed, insured and easy to check

We're fully licensed and insured, and you can ask any bidder, us included, which license class they hold. California's contractor board has a masonry class covering brick, block, stone and fire brick.

  • Repair work that blends in

We've been in business since 2023, and careful repair on brick and stone is what we're best known for. New mortar has to blend with the old, or the patch shows for years.

On a pointing job, what counts is how the old mortar comes out and what goes back in. Ask for an estimate and I'll go over both at your wall. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.

How we do brick pointing

Before anything else, I tell you how the old mortar will come out, because the wrong tool on thin joints chips brick edges. Power saws on thin joints, which most brick walls have, almost always break the brick edges and overcut the vertical joints, so we pick the removal tool for your joint width and tell you which one before we start. Then we clear each bad joint back far enough for the new mortar to bond, brush out the dust, pack the mortar in firmly and shape the face to match the joints around it before we clean the brick and the ground below.

Sometimes the mortar isn't the real problem. Cracks that keep coming back along the same line, or a wall that has started to lean, usually mean something is moving underneath, and that calls for foundation repair before any new mortar goes in. When worn joints show up on a chimney along with loose brick or a cracked cap, we handle it as chimney repair, so the whole stack gets fixed at once.

  • Repointing to match your joints

This is what most houses need, new mortar matched to the color, texture and joint shape already on the wall. The repair should disappear into the old work, so you see a sound wall and not a patch.

  • Decorative tuckpointing

This older style fills the joint flush with mortar colored like the brick, then adds a thin line of contrasting mortar that looks like a very fine joint. If a bid says tuckpointing, ask whether it means plain repointing or this look.

How can you tell your brick joints are wearing out?

  • Mortar sunk behind the brick

The joints sit back from the brick face, so you can see each brick's edge. The mortar has worn away, and the longer it goes, the deeper we have to cut.

  • Grit piling up below

Mortar that rubs off on your finger or collects as sand at the base of the wall has lost its strength. Those joints open up next and let water behind the brick.

  • Gaps and holes in joints

Holes or missing chunks between bricks mean the mortar there has already let go. Water gets into the wall through them, and bricks around a gap can loosen and shift.

  • Thin cracks along the brick

A hairline crack where mortar meets brick means the bond has broken and water gets in there first. If the cracks climb the wall in steps, I'll check what's underneath before quoting mortar.

What happens after you call about brick pointing?

  1. Call and set the visit

Call (209) 308-1015 or send the form and we'll set a time. I look the masonry over closely, take measurements and photos, and write up what we'll fix and how.

  2. We repoint the listed joints

Once you're ready, our crew does the work with me on site the whole time. We stick to the joints the estimate names and tell you before touching anything else.

  3. Walk the finished wall together

When the joints are done, I walk the job with you and show you what we repointed. Then we clean the brick and the ground below and pack up.

Brick pointing questions we hear

Here's what Merced homeowners usually ask before they let anyone cut into their mortar. If your wall doesn't fit these answers, ask me about it at the estimate.

How do I know my brick needs repointing?

Your brick needs repointing when the mortar has worn back more than 1/4 inch from the face, is crumbling, has gaps, or shows hairline cracks or cracks between the brick and the mortar. Walk your walls and look for those before you ask for a bid, because it helps you describe what you're seeing. Photos of the worst spots help me too.

Does the whole brick wall need new mortar, or just the bad joints?

Usually just the bad joints. Only defective joints need repointing, because the work takes a lot of labor and sound original joints hold up better than repointed ones. I mark the joints that need it and leave the good ones alone, since I'd rather tell you a joint is fine than sell you work you don't need.

What kind of mortar should be used for repointing old brick?

The new mortar shouldn't be harder than the brick or the old mortar around it. Harder mortar can stress the wall as it heats and cools, and then the bricks break down instead of the joints. Ask any mason what mortar they plan to use and how it compares with what's there, and I'll tell you mine at the estimate.

How long does brick repointing take, and how noisy is it?

It's slow, careful work, and it's loud while the old mortar comes out. On a taller wall, scaffolding may stay up on that side of the house for a while, so before we start I tell you which side will be busy and noisy and you can plan around it.

How do I choose a mason for brick repointing in Merced?

Pick someone who has done repointing before, not just new brick, because the brick industry's trade group notes that an excellent bricklayer may not be skilled at repointing. Ask each bidder to show past repointing projects and to explain how they'll take out the old mortar and what goes back in.

How much does brick pointing cost in Merced?

There's no set price, because each wall is priced from its own joints. Thin joints that have to come out carefully, upper-story work that needs scaffolding and a mortar color that's hard to match all add labor, while a few bad joints low on one wall keep the job small. Your estimate gives you the scope in writing so you can see what drives your number.
