What goes into stone masonry in Merced, and what sets the price?

Stone masonry in Merced is building walls, fences and paving in natural or manufactured stone, with or without mortar, and repointing older stone walls whose joints have worn so the stone stays tight and sheds water.

Most calls start one of two ways. Either it's an older wall whose joints have gone soft and sandy, or it's a project you've been planning, like a garden wall, a low wall along a bed or stone facing over a plain block wall. The price moves with the stone you pick, the size of the wall or the square feet of facing, whether it's stacked dry or set in mortar, and on a repair, how much old mortar has to come out. The schedule mostly turns on the weather, because fresh mortar has to be kept from hard cold and from drying too fast on a hot Merced afternoon. I'll go over all of that at your property and put the scope in writing, so you know what we'll fix and how before anything starts.

Why Merced homeowners call Optimum Merced Concrete and Masonry for stone work

  • The owner on every estimate

I come out to look at your stone and write the estimate myself, then I work on site with our crew while the job gets done. The details I promise are the ones I check.

  • Merced business since 2023

I learned masonry on a crew when I was young and came back to the trade to start this business in Merced in 2023. We're known for repairs where new mortar has to blend with the old.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured, so the work in your yard is covered and done by people allowed to do it. Ask any mason you're comparing for the same before you sign.

With stone, a shortcut in the joints or the wrong wall type shows for years, so I'd rather look at it with you first. Send a request or call (209) 308-1015.

How we handle stone masonry, from picking the stone to the last joint

I start by helping you make two choices before anything gets ordered. The first is natural stone or manufactured stone, which is a cast facing that gives a wall the look of stone but carries none of its weight. The second is whether the wall is stacked dry, held in place by the weight, size and shape of each rock, or set in mortar, where the joints between the stones give it its strength. Then our crew lays out the run, sets the stone course by course, fills and tools the joints, and cleans the face before mortar can harden on it. On a repair, we take out the worn mortar carefully and mix new mortar to blend with the old.

Stone work often sits next to other masonry. If your wall or chimney is brick, brick pointing is the same careful joint work done on brick. If the stone is going on a house whose base has cracked, we look at foundation repair first, because new stone set over a crack that's still moving will crack right along with it.

  • Natural stone

This suits walls that have to stand on their own, like a garden wall, a fence or paving, and anyone who wants the variation real stone has. It's heavier and slower to set, which shows up in the price.

  • Manufactured stone facing

This suits an existing wall you want to look like stone, such as a block wall or a house front, because it's light and goes on as a surface. It isn't for anything that has to carry weight.

How do you know your stone wall needs work?

  • Sandy, crumbling mortar joints

If mortar rubs out of the joints like sand or sits well back from the stone face, the joints are worn, and water gets deeper into the wall every season you wait.

  • Loose or shifting stones

A stone that rocks under your hand or has slid out of line usually means the mortar around it has let go, and one loose stone tends to loosen the ones beside it.

  • A wall that leans

A garden wall leaning out at the top is being pushed harder than it was built to take. Waiting lets the lean grow until stones start coming down, and then it's a rebuild.

  • Stains or flaking stone

White stains or a stone face that's flaking usually mean water is moving through the wall and can't dry out, often because of the wrong mortar. Left alone, the stone itself starts to wear away.

Stone masonry questions we hear

Here are the questions Merced homeowners ask most about stone walls, facing and repairs. If yours isn't here, send a photo of the wall and ask me about your own job.

How much does stone veneer cost in Merced?

Installed stone veneer across the US usually costs about $15 to $45 per square foot, so treat that as the market range, not a quote. Where your wall lands depends on the stone, the square feet of facing, how much prep the wall behind it needs and how many corners and openings it has. I'll measure it at your property and put the scope in writing.

Who can build a stone garden wall in California?

A contractor licensed in California's C-29 Masonry class can, and the state's contractor board says a wall built only for looks can also go to a licensed landscaping contractor. A general building contractor can take the job too, but only if they hold that specialty class or hire out the work to someone properly licensed for it. Before you sign, ask which license the person building your wall holds.

Is manufactured stone as strong as real stone?

It isn't meant to be, because manufactured stone is a lightweight facing cast from a cement-based mix and carries none of the wall's weight. The strength has to come from the wall behind it, so for a freestanding wall, natural stone or a built wall under the facing is the right call.

Why does mortar matter when repairing an old stone wall?

Mortar matters because when it keeps moisture from moving out of the wall and drying off, the stone itself starts to break down. On an older wall the repair mortar has to let the wall dry, so ask about it before anyone repoints. Preservation guidance also says hand chisels take more labor but usually carry the least risk to older masonry, while a grinder in unskilled hands can do real damage.

What is the best time of year to build a stone wall in Merced?

Milder days are best, because one trade group's guide calls for protecting manufactured stone work at 40°F or below and keeping it from drying fast above 100°F. That protection runs through the work and 48 hours after in cold, or 72 hours after in heat. In Merced, that usually means planning around the hottest stretch of summer and the coldest winter mornings.

How long does stone masonry last before it needs work?

Stone masonry is generally seen as permanent, but it still wears over time, and most of that wear shows up at the mortar joints. A sound wall can go a long time with only its joints needing attention. When I look at yours, I'll tell you if a joint is fine rather than sell you work you don't need.
