Do the mortar joints in my brick wall need tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is the repair of worn or crumbling mortar joints in a brick wall. In Merced we do it by cutting out only the failing mortar and packing in new mortar that suits your brick, so the wall keeps water out again.

Most people call when they notice sandy, sunken or cracked joints and aren't sure whether it's a few spots or the whole wall. Original joints in good shape are better than new ones, and repointing is slow hand work, so I mark only the joints that have failed and keep the bill to what you need. I'd rather tell you a joint is fine than sell you work you don't need. The price turns on how many joints need work, how tall the wall is, how easy it is to reach and the condition of the brick, and the schedule mostly turns on the size of the wall and any drainage fix that has to come first. The written estimate spells out which joints we'll fix and how. We're based in Merced and work in the cities around it, including Atwater, Turlock, Modesto and Madera.

Why Merced homeowners call Optimum Merced Concrete and Masonry for tuckpointing

  • The owner scopes every wall

I come out myself to look the joints over and write the estimate, then I work on site with our crew. The person who decided what to fix is there making sure it's fixed that way.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured on every job we take. If something goes wrong on a ladder or a brick gets damaged, you're not the one left to sort it out.

  • Repair work in Merced since 2023

I started this business in Merced in 2023 after relearning the trade one detail at a time. We're best known for repairs where new mortar has to blend into old brick.

Your satisfaction, guaranteed. If your joints are starting to go, send us a request with a few photos and I'll come take a closer look.

How we do tuckpointing on your brick

We start by asking which finish you want, plain joints or the older look with a fine contrasting line. Then we try a small test patch somewhere out of sight so you can check the color against your old mortar before we touch the main wall. If a leaking downspout or other drainage problem is soaking the wall, that gets repaired first, because water like that can wash much of a wall's mortar out again. After that we cut out only the joints that have failed and mix mortar softer than your brick, since mortar harder than the brick makes the brick faces flake off. We pack the joints, tool them to the finish you picked and keep the new mortar from drying too fast, because mortar that dries too quickly bonds poorly and doesn't hold up. We clean the wall down when we're done.

Sometimes the joints aren't the only problem. If bricks are cracked, loose or flaking, that's brick repair, and I'll usually write it into the same estimate so the wall gets fixed in one go. And if you've been thinking about the drive in front of the house, we also lay driveway pavers.

  • Plain repointed joints

This suits most homes, where you want the repaired joints to disappear into the rest of the wall. We tool them to match the shape of your existing joints so the repair doesn't stand out.

  • Older thin-line finish

This suits older brick fronts that already have it, or owners who want that look. A fine strip of contrasting mortar makes each joint read very thin, and it takes more hand time.

  • Spot repair of failing sections

This suits a wall where one area, often near a downspout or close to the ground, has worn out while the rest is sound. We repair those joints and leave the good ones alone.

How do you know your mortar joints are failing?

  • Mortar sunk behind the brick

The mortar has worn back from the brick faces, leaving a little ledge along each joint. That usually means the joints are eroding, and each soaking washes a bit more out.

  • Mortar that crumbles

Rub a joint and it turns to sand in your fingers. That mortar has lost its bond, and once it goes, water gets into the wall and starts loosening the bricks around it.

  • Gaps and holes in joints

You can see open pockets or voids where mortar should be. Those let water straight into the wall, and the longer they sit, the more joints around them start to fail.

  • Cracks along the brick edges

Hairline cracks run through the mortar or open up between brick and mortar. They start small, but water follows them in, and a few cracked joints can grow into a whole section.

Tuckpointing questions, answered

These are the questions I hear most about worn mortar joints. If your wall doesn't fit any of them, call or send a few photos and ask about your own.

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

Yes, tuckpointing is another name for repointing, the repair of worn mortar joints in a masonry wall. The word also covers an older finish where a thin line of contrasting mortar makes each joint look very fine, so tell us which one you mean when you call.

How much does tuckpointing cost in Merced, CA?

Tuckpointing across the US usually costs about $5 to $25 per square foot of wall, going by what homeowners report paying. That's a national range, not a Merced price, and where your wall lands in it comes down to the drivers covered above. Your own figure comes from the written estimate after I've seen the wall.

How do I know if my brick joints need tuckpointing?

Your joints need work if the mortar has worn back more than about 1/4 inch from the brick face, or if it's crumbling, gapped or cracked. Any of those is a clear reason to repair the joints. Plenty of walls have a few bad joints and a lot of good ones, and I'll tell you which is which.

How long does new mortar last after tuckpointing?

Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, while the bricks themselves may well last over 100. That means a brick wall can need its joints redone now and then over its life, and that's normal wear, not a sign the brick is going bad.

Can an unlicensed handyman do tuckpointing in California?

Only on very small jobs. The state licensing board lets unlicensed workers take on minor work up to $1,000, and only when the job needs no permit and the worker has no employees. Above that, you need a licensed contractor, and you can ask any bidder which license class they hold.

What is the best way to match new mortar to old brick?

The best way is to check a sample of the new mortar on your own wall, not a chart. The color of the sand and the type of cement both change how new mortar looks, which is why we try the hidden test patch before starting the main wall.
