Should you put pavers on your driveway in Merced?

Driveway pavers in Merced, CA are individual concrete units laid tight over a compacted base. They give you a paved driveway made for the cars you park on it, in a pattern and color you pick.

We're based in Merced and work in the cities around it, including Atwater, Turlock, Modesto and Madera. Most people who call me about pavers have a cracked concrete slab or a gravel drive they're done with. The price depends mostly on the size, how much old concrete or soil has to come out, how deep the base has to go and how many cuts your pattern needs. The schedule depends on that same dig-out and on any permit your address needs. Some people add a walkway to the front door while the crew is already set up. Your own figure comes from the estimate, which I write after I've measured and looked the driveway over.

Why Merced homeowners call Optimum Merced Concrete and Masonry for pavers

  • The owner measures and works on site

I come out to look at your driveway and write the estimate myself, then I work on site with our crew while it's built. The person who measured is there checking each layer before it's covered.

  • Fully licensed and insured in California

We're fully licensed and insured. Under California law a driveway at your home counts as home improvement, so the contract has to tell you your right to cancel, and any change goes in writing.

  • In business since 2023

I came back to this trade after years in other work and took my time relearning the details, and we've been in business since 2023. On a driveway that shows in straight lines and clean cuts at the edges.

The base under the pavers decides how the driveway holds up, so that's where I start. Ask for an estimate and I'll come take a look.

How we build a paver driveway

Before anything gets dug, I talk through the laying pattern with you, because some patterns hold up better than others under cars every day. The estimate shows how we'll build the base underneath. On the job we mark out the layout, dig out the old concrete or soil and grade the ground so water runs away from the house and garage. We spread and compact the base in layers, then set edging along the sides to hold everything in. Next we level a thin bed of sand, lay the pavers in your pattern and cut the edges clean. Last, we run a compactor over the whole surface and sweep sand into the joints so the pavers lock together. Then we clean up.

A driveway rarely sits by itself. If yours runs along a slope or a raised planter, a retaining wall keeps the soil off the pavers and away from their edges. A new driveway can also make old brick steps, columns or a front wall look worn. Our masonry restoration work brings that older masonry back in line, with new mortar matched to the old.

  • Interlocking concrete pavers

These suit most driveways that carry cars every day, because tight joints and the right pattern let the pavers share the load. Most of our driveway conversations start here.

  • Permeable pavers

These suit owners who want rain to soak down through the driveway instead of running into the street. They have wider joints filled with small stone. Not every lot suits them, so I check how water moves on yours before I recommend them.

How do you know your driveway needs work?

  • Cracks spreading across concrete

Cracks that keep widening in a concrete driveway usually mean the ground under it has moved. Every patch just holds until the next piece breaks loose.

  • Pavers that rock underfoot

If a paver tips when you step on its edge, the sand bed under it has usually shifted. The longer cars roll over loose pavers, the more they push their neighbors out of line.

  • A dip where tires sit

A low spot in the wheel path usually means the base settled there, and the water it holds softens more of the base. We can lift those pavers, fix the base and reset them.

  • Edges drifting into the yard

When the outside row creeps toward the lawn, the edging that holds the pavers in has usually given way. As the joints open, the whole driveway slowly loses the grip that keeps it flat.

What happens after you call about driveway pavers in Merced?

  1. Call or send a request

Call (209) 308-1015 or use the form, and I'll come out to measure, take photos and look over your driveway. You get a written estimate saying what we'll do and how.

  2. Check permits, then build

Before we dig, we check whether a city or Merced County covers your address and handle any permit paperwork with you. Then I work with our crew through every layer.

  3. Walk the finished driveway together

Once the last joint is swept full, I walk the driveway with you before we pack up. Tell me then about anything you want a second look at.

Driveway paver questions we hear

These are the questions people ask me most about paver driveways. If yours has its own quirks, like a slope, an old slab or tight corners, ask and I'll give you a straight answer.

How much does a paver driveway cost per square foot?

Installing driveway pavers across the US usually costs about $18 to $23 per square foot. Where yours lands depends on how much old concrete comes out, how deep the base goes and how many cuts the pattern needs. Your own number comes from the written estimate after I measure.

Which paver pattern is best for a driveway with cars on it every day?

Herringbone laid at 45 or 90 degrees is the pattern the industry guide recommends where cars drive on pavers all the time, because it gives the most interlock and strength. Other patterns can look good on a driveway. If yours sees cars daily, that strength counts for more with me than the look.

Can I drive on a new paver driveway right away?

Yes. Concrete pavers don't need time to cure, so they're ready for traffic as soon as the paving is done. That means you get your driveway back without the wait a poured slab needs.

Who can install driveway pavers in California?

California's Contractors State License Board has a contractor classification that covers placing paving and other surfacing materials. You can ask any bidder whether their license covers that work. One industry guide also says pavers should be laid by experienced contractors who hold a current ICPI Concrete Paver Installer certificate, so that's fair to ask about too.

How thick should the base be under a paver driveway?

For a home driveway on well-drained soil, the industry spec calls for a base at least 6 inches thick. Over clay, or ground that stays wet part of the year, a fabric layer called a geotextile may go under the base. When you compare bids, ask each one to write down its base depth and whether it includes that fabric.

Do I need a permit for a paver driveway in Merced County?

The county's permit list doesn't name driveway pavers, so the answer has to come from the office that covers your address. Merced County's Public Works Road Division issues encroachment permits and work authorizations, and it's the place to ask about county work. If a county permit is issued, you can check its status on the Merced County Road Division permit portal.
