What does fireplace installation in Merced involve?

Fireplace installation in Merced means one of three jobs: building a brick or stone fireplace on site, fitting an insert into the fireplace you have, or setting a factory-built or gas unit that arrives ready to go in. Optimum Merced Concrete and Masonry is based in Merced and does all three here and in the cities around it, including Atwater, Turlock, Modesto and Madera.

Most calls start one of two ways. Either you've got an old fireplace that puts out more smoke than heat, or you've got a room with no fireplace and a wall where you'd like one. The price moves with the kind of firebox you have, wood or gas, how far the vent has to run to get outside, and how much brick or stone goes around it. The schedule turns on when the unit arrives, what shape any chimney we're reusing is in, since a worn one may need chimney repair first, and what the city or county asks for at your address. I put all of that in a written scope after I've looked at your fireplace, so the number fits your house.

Why Merced homeowners call Optimum Merced Concrete and Masonry for fireplaces

  • The owner looks and builds

We've been in business since 2023, and I come out to look at your fireplace myself. I'm on site with our crew during the work, so the details in the estimate get built that way.

  • Fully licensed and insured, shown upfront

We're fully licensed and insured, and I'll show you the paperwork before work starts. A fireplace puts heat into the walls of your house, so the crew building it should be covered.

  • Vented gas units for Merced homes

Some gas units are made to run with no outside vent, but they raise indoor air concerns and some places don't allow them. For a Merced home, we plan on a vented unit from the first visit.

If you're weighing an insert against a new build, call (209) 308-1015 or send a request and I'll come look at what you have before we talk options.

How we do fireplace installation in Merced

The first thing I figure out is whether you have a masonry firebox, the brick or stone box built in place, or a factory-built metal unit, because that decides what can go in. For a gas unit, we plan the vent route and the clear space around it from the start, since those two things set where the fireplace can sit and how the wall around it gets built. Once the plan is settled, our crew builds the firebox or sets the unit, lays up the brick, block or stone around it, finishes the hearth and cleans up.

Plenty of fireplace jobs grow into the wall around them. If you want the surround faced in stone, stone veneer installation is usually how we finish it, and when the fireplace needs a solid base or enclosure, we build that first with concrete block walls.

  • Masonry fireplace built on site

This suits a homeowner who wants brick or stone through and through and has room for the weight and a chimney. It's the most masonry work of any option, so it usually costs the most and takes the longest.

  • Insert for your existing fireplace

This suits a house that already has a fireplace that doesn't do much. The insert sits inside the firebox, so you keep the brick face you have and get a closed unit in place of the open one.

  • Factory-built or gas fireplace

This suits a room with no fireplace, or a wall with no chimney behind it. The unit comes ready to install, and we frame and face the surround around it in brick, stone or block.

How do you know it's time for a new fireplace or insert?

  • Smoke comes into the room

If smoke rolls out the front when you light a fire, the firebox or chimney isn't drawing right. Waiting means more soot on the brick and walls, and it can point to damage inside.

  • Only the hearth gets warm

You light a fire and the spot right in front gets warm while the rest of the room stays cold. That usually means the open firebox isn't doing much for you, and an insert or gas unit is worth pricing.

  • Cracked firebrick or open joints

Cracks or gaps in the firebrick lining the back and sides mean heat can reach places it shouldn't. Left alone, the damage spreads into the chimney and the fix gets bigger.

  • Rust on a metal unit

Rust, warped panels or cracked glass on a factory-built fireplace usually means the unit is near the end of its life. Waiting often means a cold season with no fireplace while a replacement is ordered.

What happens after you call us about a fireplace?

  1. You call, I come look

You call or send a request, and I come out to look over the firebox and chimney closely and take measurements and photos. Then I write up what we'll build or fix and how.

  2. We sort permits and build

Once you're ready, we check what the city or Merced County asks for at your address and handle any permit paperwork with you. Then our crew and I do the work.

  3. Walk the finished fireplace together

When the fireplace is done, I walk it with you before we pack up. You'll see the hearth, the surround and the vent connection while I'm still there to answer questions.

Fireplace questions from Merced homeowners

These are the questions we hear most about fireplaces, inserts and gas units. If yours isn't here, send us a note about your fireplace and I'll answer it for your house.

How do I know if an insert will fit my current fireplace?

An insert will fit if it's made for the kind of fireplace you have. Inserts go inside the firebox of an existing masonry or metal fireplace, but a factory-built fireplace, the kind sometimes called zero-clearance, needs an insert designed and tested for that exact unit. If yours is factory-built, the maker and model on the unit tell us which inserts can go in.

Do I need a chimney for a gas fireplace in Merced?

No, a gas fireplace doesn't need a chimney. Gas units today can vent through an existing chimney or straight out through the roof or the wall behind them. One vent maker's instructions say the gas vent has to run directly outside and can't be tied into a chimney that serves another wood or gas appliance, and they name a missing air space between the vent and anything that can burn as a major cause of vent fires.

Is a wood fireplace a good way to heat my home?

Usually not. A wood-burning fireplace is generally a very inefficient way to heat a home, because drafts pull warm air up the chimney and leave the other rooms cooler. Open fireplaces also burn less cleanly than EPA-certified wood heaters, so if heat is the goal, compare the two, and give us a call to talk through what suits your house.

How much does it cost to install a gas fireplace?

Across the US, a gas insert or a new direct-vent gas fireplace, installed, usually costs about $1,500 to $10,000 per job. That's a national range for gas units, not our price. Where your job lands depends on the unit, the vent route and how much masonry goes around it, and my written estimate spells that out for your house.

What license does a fireplace contractor need in California?

For a brick or stone fireplace, look for a masonry license. The state's contractor license board defines a masonry contractor as one who installs natural and manufactured stone, and fire brick or other heat-resistant material, so it's fair to ask any contractor whether they hold it.

How do I convert my old chimney to a direct-vent gas fireplace?

Start by having the chimney you have inspected. The vent maker's conversion instructions say a qualified chimney sweep or professional installer should look it over first, and the chimney has to be sound and serviceable for the conversion to go ahead. If it isn't, it gets repaired first or the vent goes out through the wall or roof.
